Good night, Kludd! Sorry for that… But anyways, this was SUCH a good book! And it has SO MANY CLIFFHANGERS! I mean, take Gylfie's storyline, and that, again, is documentary-level stuff. It also ends on a HUUUUUUUGE cliffhanger! I wanna know who wins, what happens with the Pure Ones, what the effects of cold fire are, et cetera! Overall, I'd say 9 out of 10, too many cliffhangers.

Guardians Of Ga'Hoole #8 The Outcast Kathryn Lasky 9780439739511 Books Reviews

I love this book!!! I thought it was sooo sweet!!!! The plot on free will was really well written and really nice!!!! I love how Nyroc decides to pursue his own dreams and decides to go on a quest for truth. He leaves behind his mother and takes his best friend, Phillip on a quest for truth. Unforchanetly, Phillip is killed by Nyra so Nyroc continues on his quest for truth alone. Nyroc is such a brave anf nice owl. He vanquishes his dead father and mother's plans of evil.

Nyroc has a special gift that eveyone has free will.
Nyroc, the child of Nyra and Kludd, finds who he is truly meant to be. He has firesight and meets a rabbit that is a web-reader. He listens to the Legends of Ga'hoole and learns from Dustytuft/Phillip, Mist/Hortense, the Eagles, Otulissa, Gwyndor, Gyllbane, Hamish, and Duncan MacDuncan. He still needed to prove that he is no longer a Pure One and tries to save the
Ember of Hoole. Nyra makes evil deals with the MacHeaths, Uglamore and Doc Finebeak escape the Pure Ones and live out what is left of their lives in the Beyond with the Dire Wolves.
Guardians of Ga'Hoole Books 7 The Hatchling
by Kathryn Lasky

In the seventh installment of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, author Kathryn Lasky brings into play a new character, Nyroc--son of the evil Pure Ones' leaders, Kludd and his mate Nyra. We learn of his childhood and upbringing, and the hardships faced by the young Barn owl as a result of his mother's cruelty. He finds a friend in the lowly-ranked Sooty owl, Dustytuft, and together they escape the Pure Ones. But the dangers are far from over. Nyra and a fleet of trackers and trusted Pure Ones are hot on the two friends' tail feathers. Eventually, they will have to resort to escape through a horrible range of mountain peaks, called the Shredders. One life will be lost, and one threatened.
Guardians of Ga'Hoole 8 The Outcast
by Kathryn Lasky

Another great story in the "Guardians" series.

Young Coryn is on the run, doomed to forever be an outcast of society. Wished dead by his mother and hated by the noble inhabitants of the Great Ga'Hoole tree (as well as all the other owls of the area), he has nowhere to go. Or so it seems. One day, he is visited by the scroom, or spirit, of a kind old Spotted owl whom he doesn't know, and suddenly his life has a purpose. A young Burrowing owl has been hatched, and Coryn suddenly realizes it is his mission to become a mentor of sorts to the hatchling. But first he must learn the skill himself. As urged by the scroom, he journeys to Beyond the Beyond, a rugged, volcano-dotted terrain inhabited by the dire wolves. It is there that his ultimate destiny will become clear, and Coryn's life will change.
Nyroc, the son of Nyra and Kludd, has hatched and seams to be perfect at everything to other Pure Ones. But when he finds out that his Special Ceremony involves killing his best friend, he tries to escape. He gets a scar that matches his mother's and can't escape his father's scroom. He flees 're Silverveil, learns more about his firesight and meets a rabbit that is a webreader. Nyroc discovers the truth of his father's death and overhears legends of Ga'hoole. Otulissa has a strange connection with Nyroc that neither of them understand. READ THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW!!
Great value for a special 8-year-old fan of Kathryn Lasky. She inhaled all 15 of these books in about 8 weeks. She loved the stories and the great lessons woven carefully into each book. Highly recommended -- for an avid young reader or someone that you want to turn into an avid young reader! Thanks Kathryn, , and Rephisto Books!
My nine-year-old son is devouring these books, and I love them. The writing is good. The grammar is, for the most part, excellent. And the books stretch my son's vocabulary just exactly enough.

However, I'm noticing a bit of confusion from him that, I think, could have been avoided with just a bit of planning on the storyteller's part. Beginning with The Hatchling, the saga is focused away from the Great Ga'Hoole Tree, a place in which, at this point, my son has invested a significant bit of fictional time. It seems to me (and I haven't read ahead, so I don't really know) that the publisher, if not the author, could have signaled this by dividing the books into subseries (much the way the Ga'Hoolian Legends are divided into cycles). The Hatchling and The Outcast also lack the illustrations of the characters found in the fronts and backs of the first six books, so there's no clue from that, either. Put that together with a slight lag in the pace of the saga, which I'll allow as necessary to fully establish a new protagonist, and this book comes in, for me, as slightly less amazing than The Capture and the books that come right after that one.

Other than those points, I have nothing but praise for this book. Nyroc's development is finely drawn, and, while the free will drum is beaten like a rented mule, the choices Nyroc makes are dramatic and suspenseful. The scenery is well-described without bogging down the action, and a couple of things brought both my son and me to tears. I've already ordered the next book and am looking forward to reading it with my son.
